The Election Commission’s decision to hold the 13th General Election (GE) on a Sunday has earned the wrath of a senior clergyman. Bishop Paul Tan condemned the Election Commission (EC) “as a reflection of the callous insensitivity towards Christians here.”
He said that despite the government knowing that Sunday is a holy day where Christians must go to Church and worship God, EC has fixed May 5 for polling.
“This disrespect of the government of the Christian rights is to be denounced. It just proves that the government is not sincere in its 1Malaysia slogan,” added the head of the Malacca and Johor diocese. For full report in FMT read HERE.
With due respect to Reverend Bishop Paul Tan, this is not the first time in our history that GEs were held on a Sunday. Just for the record, there have been THREE previous GEs that were held on SUNDAY too. They were as follows:
3rd August 1986 (SUNDAY)
21st October 1990 (SUNDAY)
21st March 2004 (SUNDAY)
During the said three GEs (1986, 1990 & 2004), your truly have never heard Malaysians of whatever faith complaining about the GE being held on a Sunday except on this occasion.
Just wonder, what has inspired a bishop of Reverend Paul Tan’s standing to make such sweeping statements when there were three previous GEs held on Sunday?
