Your MP's Question of the Week #46

The Abdullah Badawi government, for some reasons, has been most caring and generous with Air Asia.

The patronage and molly-coddling it receives seems to make the budget airline appears to be the “most favoured son or company.”  What it asks for, it gets. It can do no wrong. The budget airline can even avoid forwarding airport tax it has collected on behalf of the authority and get away with it. For lesser folks and companies, when taxes are owed, the offence is liable for a hefty fine and maybe even a jail term.

But not Air Asia. It’s like the spoilt brat who can do no wrong and get anything it wishes.

For instance, the existing LCCT, originally costing about RM90 million, was built for Air Asia with lightning speed and completed in a matter of months. Last year, the Badawi government spent another RM124 million to extend it — bringing the total cost of the LCCT to around RM214 million. Now, the CEO of Air Asia, Datuk Tony Fernandes, wants another LCCT at Labu and this Badawi government is flip-flopping from yes, no and now ‘under discussion.’

So it does appear that, at all material times, the Badawi government is a considerate government and that’s why it has also allowed Air Asia to owe airport tax to the tune of RM140 million since 2002. How caring and generous indeed! I believe the Badawi government must have also helped other public listed companies in a similar way. But how about also helping the ordinary rakyat to appear to be a fair and good government to all?

Should the Badawi government, in all fairness, also extends its caring and generous attitude to the ordinary rakyat by allowing each and every rakyat to owe income tax and whatever other taxes, much like what Air Asia is doing?

Soalan Mingguan WR Anda ke-46
