This is an update of a meeting with Datuk Bandar and the Members of Parliament in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 22 July 2010, at DBKL head office. Some of the issues discussed, with reference to Wangsa Maju, are as follows:-
1. Cybercafes
It is reported that todate actions have been taken against 4 outlets to help stem the rise of social ills in Wangsa Maju which include online gambling, porn viewing and loan-sharking activities associated with these outlets. Datuk Bandar, however, feels that more could be done as Wangsa Maju is highly populated and covers a vast geographical area. To show his commitment to Wangsa Majuians and their families that he has their welfare at heart, he has decided to declare “war against cybercafés” not only in our ‘kawasan’ but also throughout Kuala Lumpur. DBKL officers are reminded to monitor and enforce this policy on a continuous basis to help promote, protect and preserve the healthy social environment of our city.
2. Uptown ‘Pasar Malam’
Datuk Bandar fully agrees that the numerous problems faced by the residents living nearby are intolerable and DBKL is still looking for an alternative site. He recognises the long business hours of the pasar malam that sometimes stretched up to as early as 5.00 or 6.00 a.m. the following morning are unhealthy and a major concern. Also, despite a residents’ protest regarding the ‘extension’ of this pasar malam, DBKL still proceeded to grant 30 new licences to KOBERA early this year. To relocate this pasar malam, it’s noted that the ideal would be to find a suitable location away from residential homes that would overcome noise pollution, traffic congestion, negative health impacts, crimes and other social ills. Datuk Bandar sees this relocation exercise as his biggest and most urgent challenge.
3. Lot 214, Jalan Gombak
On 29 June 2010, DBKL has taken action to tear down a whole stretch of concrete wall that has been illegally built on government land ear-marked for a 20 feet wide access road. The access road is meant for the free movement of residents in and out of their homes located at the back of the lot. They have been denied this facility and inconvenienced for almost a year. But before the construction of the access road can be looked into, the owner of the said lot has replaced the wall torn down with a wire-link fence on the exact former spot in contravention of DBKL’s regulation. Datuk Bandar has given further strict instructions to tear down the fence for the construction of the access road to proceed. Should the lot owner continue to break the law, DBKL will not hesitate to take harsher action.
4. Jalan Genting Klang
The major upgrade of the road is scheduled to be fully completed by 18 November 2010 under the 9th Malaysia Plan. Wangsa Maju has been informed that the contractor, Mentari Construction Sdn Bhd, has asked for the date of completion to be extended until the end of the year 2011. Datuk Bandar is not agreeable to the request and insists that all projects under the 9th Malaysia Plan must be completed within the period.
5. Hawkers in Taman Bunga Raya
It has been brought to the attention of Datuk Bandar that DBKL did not properly control the hawkers in the area. The area is now infested with pests especially rats. DBKL noted the complaints from the residents and has promised to take necessary actions.
