Your MP's Question of the Week #16

On 2 July 2008, the Inspector-General of Police, Musa Hassan, suggested that the police consider getting the army involved to help the police maintain public order due to a planned mass protest against the petrol price hike on Sunday, 6 July 2008 at 10.00am at Stadium MBPJ Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya.

The main responsibility of our soldiers is to protect the country from invasion by unfriendly, foreign forces. It would now appear that the soldiers would be used to protect “national security.”

Whose security? The nation or the powers-that-be?

The question of the week:

Should Malaysian soldiers, at any given time, be used as an apparatus to suppress legitimate expression of discontent over the Badawi government’s decision to increase petrol price without notice?
