TF didn’t tell the whole truth about AirAsia X & RAS

One not telling the truth and the other condoning it!

Updated: 25-10-2011 Please read the article quoted from Business Time report dated 21-7-2006AirAsia not the ‘golden child’. You will see from this report how AirAsia got all the helps (i.e. AirAsia was given 91 trunk routes and etc) from the Badawi’s Administration under the so-called “domestic air rationalisation exercise” and AirAsia grew at the expense of MAS.

Below was what Tan Sri Tony Fernandes had been reported to have said as reported by the Star on 26-4-2007 when the then Minister of Transport, Datuk Chan Kong Choy, announced that FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd had to return the Rural Air Services (RAS) in Sabah and Sarawak to MAS.

“Fernandes said FAX would be launching AirAsia Long Haul operations soon, and that it would be too distracting to operate turbo-propeller aircraft as well.”

At the material time, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes didn’t tell the nation the whole truth that FAX has failed to perform the RAS satisfactorily for Sabah and Sarawak. It was one of the most misleading statements to say the least.

In 2006 Tan Sri Tony Fernandes/AirAsia Bhd lobbied so hard for RAS during the Badawi’s Administration. RAS was taken away from MAS and granted to AirAsia Bhd. Thereafter, AirAsia Bhd subcontracted RAS to Fly Asian Express Sdn Bhd aka known as FAX and now known as AirAsia X Sdn Bhd.  On 2-10-2011 Tan Sri Tony Fernandes also claimed in his interview with AgendaDaily online that he got very little helps from the Badawi’s Administration. Yours truly leaves it to you to judge whether Tan Sri Tony Fernandes was telling the truth.

Remember Badawi’s Administration specially built LCCT costing a total of about RM250 millions, AirAsia Bhd was given special “rights” to owe Airport Taxes amounting to about RM125 millions, after AirAsia Bhd was granted RAS it was granted a subsidy of about RM180 millions and was then allowed to subcontract RAS to a newly incorporated company called Fly Asian Express Sdn Bhd now known as AirAsia X Sdn Bhd. After FAX’s failure to perform RAS satisfactorily and changed its name to AirAsia X Sdn Bhd it was granted international flights to  London, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Mumbai, New Delhi, Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai in competition with MAS.

The prominent shareholders of AirAsia X Sdn Bhd via Aero Venture Sdn Bhd are:

  • LEE KIAN ONN                                               13, 720, 666 shares
  • TAN SRI ANTHONY FRANCIS FERNANDES   33, 855, 194 shares
  • DATO’ KAMARUDIN MERANUN                      65, 375, 587 shares  

In the first place, why must AirAsia Bhd be relying on the government for helps when it is not our national carrier and profit maximisation orientated without having to perform national service or duties as our nation ambassador where profitability was never the main priority. We have been told that it has been doing extremely well with huge profits year in year out. Of course, it was never highlighted in all the press reports that a big chunk of AirAsia Bhd’s profits were from un-realised forex gained which could have also resulted in losses due to exchange rate.  Read AgendaDaily online report HERE.

Did Tan Sri Tony Fernandes tell the truth about why FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd gave up RAS?  The answer is a NO. Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar knew or ought to have known that what Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said in 2007 was not the truth. At the material time, Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar and/or YB Tan Sri Nor Mohammad Yacop, the then very powerful Minister of Finance II,  knew of how FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd screwed up the RAS in a very short period of eight months and how six aircraft were not maintained or poorly maintained and another six aircraft were cannibalised for spare parts. The extremely poor RAS provided by FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd have resulted in complaints and protests from the Sabah and Sarawak State Governments, Sarawak Tourism Board, politicians and members of the public.

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said statement was to make him and AirAisia X Sdn Bhd looked good. The then Minister of Transport YB Datuk Chan Kong Choy, who has been implicated in the PKFZ scandals and was charged in Court recently for three counts of cheating, was fully aware of the inability of FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd to provide proper RAS for the people of Sabah and Sarawak. The situation got worse when MAS discontinued all its technical and operational supports to FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd from 26-2-2007.  After March 2007, the RAS under FAX / AirAsia X Sdn Bhd were from bad to worse. 

In April 2007 the then Minister of Transport Datuk Chan Kong Choy stepped in to rescue FAX / AirAisa X Sdn Bhd by announcing that MAS had to take over the RAS. Presumably, the announcement was meant to save FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd/Tan Sri Tony Fernandes of the embarrassment.

Backgrounds of FAX’s RAS in Sabah & Sarawak and AirAsia X Sdn Bhd:

  1. On 19-5-2006 Fly Asian Express Sdn Bhd aka FAX was incorporated.
  2. At the material time, FAX has no experience whatsoever in operating an airline business.
  3. AirAsia Bhd / Tan Sri Tony Feranndes lobbied and the  Badawi’s Administration granted the RAS. Subsequently, AriAsia Bhd subcontracted RAS to FAX
  4. Thereafter, the Badawi’s Administration also granted FAX a very valuable Air Operation Certificate (AOC), without which no company can operate an airline business. A company had to satisfy the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) its financial standing, proper work force, system and technical knowledge of operating an airline. At that material time FAX could not have satisfied the conditions as as it was just been incorporated.
  5. The Badawi’s Administration gave it or AirAsia Bhd a subsidy of RM180 millions. The subsidy was paid in one lump. Your truly will table a question in Parliament to find out who actually received the said subsidy.
  6. On 1-8-2006 FAX officially took over the RAS from MAS  but MAS carried on to provide technical and operational assistance.
  7. On 26-2-2007 MAS discontinued its technical and operational support for FAX.
  8. After 26-2-2007 FAX could not satisfactorily perform the RAS as it has no technical and operational support from MAS resulting in very erratic RAS.
  9. The Badawi’s Administration received too many complaints from the Sabah and Sarawak State Governments, politicians and members of the public regarding the extremely poor RAS by FAX and the Badawi’s Administration had no alternative but to dump the RAS back to MAS, the nation’s step child.
  10. On 26-04-2007 the then Minister of Transport, Datuk Chan Kong Choy, announced that FAX will cease operating the RAS and MAS to take over.  
  11. Thereafter, MAS took over RAS and commissioned Stork Fokker to do the inspection of the twelve aircraft before it resumed RAS.  
  12. At the time of the start of the said inspection six out of the twelve aircraft were grounded awaiting parts or maintenance, and consequently only six aircraft were in service. Components and parts are being canabalised from the grounded aircraft.
  13. After the completion of the said inspections, it cost MAS RM35 millions to refurbish the aircraft. Yours truly believes that Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar was aware of the said inspections and the reports by Stork Fokker dated 3-7-2007.    
  14. On 21-09-2007 FAX changed its name from Fly Asian Express Sdn Bhd to AirAsia X Sdn Bhd. The Badawi’s Administration granted AirAsia x Sdn Bhd international routes including London, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Mumbai, New Delhi, Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai in competition with MAS.
  15. On 9-10-2011 Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar announced that the secret MAS – AirAsia share swap was inked between Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Tune Air Sdn Bhd and that Khazanah has the option to purchase 10% of AirAsia X Sdn Bhd despite the AirAsia X Sdn Bhd’s RAS track records. He also said that investment banker Stanley Morgan has been commissioned by Khazanah tocarry out a valuation exercise on AirAsia X Sdn Bhd.
  16. On 16-8-2011 during the meeting with bloggers Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, after being pressed questioned, declared that the AirAsia X Sdn Bhd was a “DODGY” deal.  
  17. Since September 2007 AirAsia X Sdn Bhd’s history was rewritten as we can see from AirAsia Bhd’s website regarding its corporate profile. Below was the new corporate profile of AirAsia X Sdn Bhd:

 It was history rewritten with no references to Fly Asian Express Sdn Bhd aka FAX or RAS or it is a different legal entity to AirAsia Bhd and that it is not a member of IATA, therefore, it was not subjected to the IATA stringent Safety Audit like MAS and other IATA members.  Read HERE for the AirAsia X’s corporate profile.

Under normal circumstances when an airline operator has been found to be financially and/or technically unsound and/or unable to carry out its operation, the Government through its Department of Civil Aviation is duty bound to nullify the Air Operation Certificate (AOC) but not in the case of FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd. Instead FAX/AirAsia X Sdn Bhd was awarded with numerous international routes by the Ministry of Transport. Routes were granted as though the Ministry of Transport has no record of AirAsia X Sdn Bhd FAX/RAS days. It was a case of WILLFUL BLINDNESS of what had happened to the RAS under FAX/AirAsia Sdn Bhd. There was no demand for the refund of the subsidy of the RM180 million on a pro rata basis, as the contract was terminated prematurely,  from AirAsia Bhd or AirAsia X Sdn Bhd by the Badawi’s Administration.

Furthermore, with the track records as reported by Stork Fokker dated 3-7-2011 the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) did not nullify the Air Operation Certificate (AOC) of AirAsia X Sdn Bhd. Yours truly believes that no positive actions have been taken by MAS or Khazanah to recover the RM35 millions from AirAsia X Sdn Bhd for refurbishing the un-airworthy aircraft.    

Read HERE for similar incidents in other less developed country like Nepal where four of its low cost airlines (Air Nepal, Alpine Air, Muktinah Airlines and Gorkha Air) have its Air Operation Certificate (AOC) nullified on 17-7-2010.

Despite the above state of affairs of FAX / AirAsia X Sdn Bhd, its AOC was in tact and were awarded with international routes by the Badawi’s Administration.  Yet, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said that he got little helps from the Badawi’s Administration.

Rural services back to MAS


Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy, who announced this Cabinet decision yesterday, gave assurances that it would not affect MAS’ turnaround plan.

“We have gone through the proposal and recommended to the Cabinet that MAS via its subsidiary Firefly be appointed to take over the rural air services.

“We also agreed that the provision of such services is the Government’s responsibility and a type of social service so we will continue subsidising the cost of running these operations, which amount to RM60mil per year, to maintain the low-fare structure.

“Officers from both my ministry and the Finance Ministry will go through all the details of the subsidy,” Chan told reporters at his office.

It has been less than a year since MAS handed over the rural air services to AirAsia, which then subcontracted them to FAX.

Earlier this month, FAX shareholder Datuk Tony Fernandes proposed that Firefly take over the operations of all rural air services, citing it as the “logical thing to do”.

Fernandes said FAX would be launching AirAsia Long Haul operations soon, and that it would be too distracting to operate turbo-propeller aircraft as well.

On Tuesday, MAS managing director Idris Jala said it would consider taking back the service if it did not jeopardise the national carrier’s turnaround plan.

“To be fair to MAS, as a public listed company, the proposal will be brought to its board for consideration. However, I have already spoken to MAS’ top management and they are prepared to look into it.

“But this is the Government’s decision. The takeover of these services will be a separate exercise from its restructuring plan. The Government will be responsible for any profit and loss incurred by MAS for the provision of these services,” he said.

In response to this latest development, Idris replied in a statement that they had just been informed of the decision and would await details from the ministry.

“Once the details are received, we will need to study them before making a decision,” he said.

FAX chief operating officer Raja Mohd Azmi Raja Razali said they were pleased with the announcement, as it would enable them to work together with Firefly on a seamless handover.

“My main concern is with the staff in Sabah and Sarawak. They have my assurance that we will take care of them in the eventual transfer.

“All employees based in Miri and Kota Kinabalu will have the option of joining Firefly or AirAsia Long Haul,” he said in a statement.

He added that this resolution would allow AirAsia Long Haul to concentrate its efforts in making the company the world’s first long-haul low-cost airline.

According to Bernama, Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer Gracie Geikie said it would be a big help towards reinstating tourism destinations in the state’s rural areas on the global map.

“As it is 100% owned by MAS, Firefly is in the best position to take over the service,” she said.

She said tourism players in the state went through an “expensive experience” after FAX took over the service.

In Kota Kinabalu, acting Sabah Tourism, Environment and Culture Minister Datuk Karim Bujang said the step would not only greatly benefit the people living in rural areas but would also help boost tourism.

    What more evidence does the government need before it will consider to review and act accordingly. Are we suppose to wait incidents by AA before the AOC be revoked. As it is, DCA must carry out inspections to ensure AA fully comply with regulations and also for AA to register with IATA for the dafety of passengers.

    YB, please remember that you have the rakyat full support for this mission. Please do not stop until the truth prevails.

    Remember how AA what happened after AA signed the share swap agreement, AA came out with an advertisement almost immediately “AA is the airline with balls”.

    He will lie just to get his way. So Azzman Mokhtar will assist in his endeavours. What a con jobs.

But they are a good pair for good business. with this new info, I am certain that MAS will be going don the drain in no time. When you have TF as your business partner your business can only go down. He will never tell the truth even when the authorities like Ministry of Transport, DCA and the other government machineries were follow aware of his lies. This TF.

      YAB PM and Menteri Kewangan had already informed Parliament that SC and Bursa KL are investigating into the alleged insider tradings and non disclosure to Bursa KL by MAS and Tune Air Sdn Bhd regarding the negotiations for the secret billion RM deals involving MAS/AirAsia. I have also brought up the matters during the Budget Debate on the issues and YAB PM/Menteri Kewangan will be replying in these coming days in Parliament. I have also tabled an official complaints regarding this secret deal to the Public Account Committee (PAC) of Parliament. In the interim, lets wait for the YAB PM’s reply during the Budget Debate and the PAC’s decision and the replies which are due very shortly.

      i have also called for the MACC to assist in the SC and Bursa investigations the insider tradings and the obvious non compliance of the Bursa KL Rules on Non- Disclosure.

    Azman Mokhtar should tell us when another share swap of this nature because we want to buy shares to make a quick kill. We miss the Mas and AirAsia this time. please help us Mr Tan Sri.

If not please read this article and they will know if they are still sleeping.     Be fairlah YB. Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar adn Rashdan didn’t know all the facts as stated in here. Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar was sleeping all these while especially when matter involved his Tony. Although he was the MD for Khazanah he didn’t know about the RAS, subsidy of RM180 million given by his bosses Nor Yakob or Abdullah or the RM35 million that MAS spent for the unairworthy aircraft. Azman was only interested in helping MAS lah like like he did during his BinaFikir days. it was because he did a good job then he was handpicked by Badawi to be MD for Khaznah in 2004.

    Recently he woke up and discovered his BinaFikir’s WAU didn’t work and he got his co-founder of BinaFikir to save MAS again. How can you blame for condoning all the lies of Tony? Tony didn’t tell him the whole truth of RAS and about AirAsia X Sdn Bhd.

    Azman already said that 10% purchase in AirAsia X Sdn Bhd is a Dodgy Deal
    but he had to please his friend Tony thats why he had to show his fairness by getting Stanley Morgan to do a valuation of AA X. Please lah Azman, Rashdan, Md Nor, Azman Yahya are great people with very very high qualifications and they didn’t know anything about Tony or what Tony had said.

    Just cannot blame Azman Mokhtar he was asleep at the relevant time like his boss, the sleepy head.

TF told him share swap was good so he agreed and went ahead. Now you all blamed him and Rashdan. THey are good people and they are trying to help MAS all the times. He is very helpful person. TF and his AA friends all love him. He is just stupid for good reason ok.

    YB… i have seem on d paper email from TF to RAS staff while in Miri back in 2007, read with my own “mark 1 eyeball” line by line, saying that not AK want to surrender the RAS, but due to constant pressure from MAS and some “silly” people in Sarawak tourism board, that why AK need to surrender the services. darn, i dun’t kept that paper. that is really solid evidence how TF “fooling” Malaysian

    YB also should ask mantan PM aka MAS “tuan penasihat” on what actually transpire in the RAS especially on the $$$$ subsidy and who actually pay for the maintenance for 6 or 7 F50 aircraft to put them back in services…. i been informed there is “wahyu” from the top not to allow MAS, together with MAB and Petronas, to recovered the cost from AK…not sure if “the truth is out there” but i believe YB is the best person in finding the truth

    wise man say ” u can fool people once but u can’t fool people all the time” but seem that when wise man create this wisdom, he never meet TF…….

    YB.. you all forgot to mention that thousands of MAS staff were laid off, retrenched to make way for the route rationalization which AirAsia eventually failed the people of Sabah and Sarawak.. MAS was called back by the government to rescue this route but not before AirAsia was compensated in millions for surrendering it to MAS or rather MASwings… Its all Rakyats money

    It is sad on the day that we heard FAX had to cease operation and returned to MH and as a former employee of FAX this are all politics of convenience . We were on the verge of improving our service and planning to have a visit to Toulouse for aircraft purchase to add to our fleet of obsolete Fokker50 . It is fact and reality that RAS never and will never make money due to the nature and structure of business in East Msia . These states are relying on subsidised federal fund for the air transport system there . It is just a matter of politicians becoming emotional on the way FAX conduct service and a change the politician never accept on how to reduce cost on Govt funds without affecting their comfort and convenience . But now even the Najib admin starts to use Air Asia for official Govt travelling expenses so only now citizens will understand the concept of FAX …we started it in 2006 thats 5 years of changing our mindset .

Do you dare to say that you didn’t know anything about RAS and how AirAsia X cannibalsied the aircraft for spare parts and that AA is going to just that for MAS. There was an official report on the cannibalisation of aircraft and I know that MAS has forwarded a copy to you as the head of Khazanah.

    Azman! Azman! you did nothing positive as the custodian of public fund by taking positive actions to recover the RM35 million from AirAsia X Sdn Bhd. You have gone over board to secretly negotiate the share swap and without notifying the Bursa KL. You are just too daring to do such a thing. You thought that Malaysians are stupid. You are so wrong. Now you have been exposed of your grave misdeeds. It was not an oversight but what you had done were done intentionally because you knew about Tony’s backgrounds and yet you saw it fit to do ahead and misled PM over this share swap.

    The intention of FAX was just to get the subsidies of RM180 millions for nothing. THat’s why FAX screw up RAS otherwise RAS would not have been in such bad shape when MAS discontinued their supports. Look at TOny”s statement to the press on 26-4-2007 where he didn’t mention about the FAX screwed up RAS but FAx waned to do long haul.

    In the first place FAX should not have been granted the Air Operation Certificate in the first place as it has no previous record. How can AIrAxis having fought so hard to get the RAS and then subcontracted to FAX? How could the Sleepy Head government allowed such subcontract. It was just a scam from day one and yet Tan Sri Azman can go along. MACC where are you? You should be looking into this deal and the share swap.It smells a dead rat!

    TF attention is very simple. just be good boy and help federal G on the air transport in Sabah/Sarawak, and after a year, bungkus FAX (foreigner will pronounce f*ck, no joke) get AOC and convert FAX to airasiaX. they know to get AOC very darn difficult, like when TF and geng want to start an airline, Dr M also dun’t want to give AOC but ask them to get from 2 failed airline in the country.

    and for doppelganger, cut the crap sh*t a*shole. i been to Sarawak and Sabah to setup Maswing operation in 2007, and based on feedback from the people over there, they are sick with FAX services and very happy when Mas to take over the RAS.

    i still remember in the newpaper before AK took over RAS, TF did said that why give the RAS to MAS and G need to subsidy yet MAS still lost, just give to AK and we will make profit and G no need to provide subsidy…. the end, like northern people said… pungkuk hang!!!!!!

    i bet with my bottom dollar AK wil never buy turboprop aircraft for RAS services. if u have many variance of aircraft, it will increase the maintenance cost and this is not the way AK work. if they planning to go to toulouse, it mere PR gimik or they just buy A320 or A330….but not aircraft for RAS

    Everybody knew that MAS was providing a good RAS until the interference of the 4th Floor with the help of the Sleeping Beauty that AirAsia/FAX got the RAS. Anyway Tony told the press that the reason for giving up RAS because it wanted to concentrate on Long Haul. What the bullshit? What about the aircraft being cannibalised for spare parts?

    TF just lied and lied that’s all. The government should have withdrawn the AOC when FAX could not perform like the Nepal Air etc. No government in the world would have granted them the AOC for long haul when it cannot even perform the RAS.

    What about the Stork Fokker Report that YB was talking about? Are you trying to tell us that the Stork Fokker Report was fictitious? I am in MAS I knew about it. So stop the bullshit and trying make TF looks good now. His image is already koyak-ed!

    Why is the MAS Unions are so quiet by its initial condemnations of the share swap and the MAS management by MASEUS? MASE is also not doing much. Have the leaders being compromised in the light of such serious share swap and the collaborations that will see MAS being degenerated into a low cost airline. MASEUS leaders what are you doing? as members we are unhappy? we were told that the leaders’ relatives got contracts from MAS? is this true?

    This is the time for MASEUS, which represent a big chunk of the MAS workers including cabin staff and other general workers. Until today the management have not told us about the details of the collaborations and how can you remain quiet? surely you cannot allowed liars to go on a rampage against MAS. If the leaders have other interests than the workers interest then please resign.

      MAS is in stage 5 cancer , nobody can save MAS , losses runs into rm300 million yearly , government can’t afford to cover these losses for the next decade . This has been goin on over 2 decades even after BTP from Idris Jala . Profits shown during BTP are just “window dressing” after selling off MAS assets . Firefly introduced into the industry to compete with AA , but its too late ,MAS should have start Firefly in 2007 after the demise of FAX. The successful collaboration of AA and ANA Japan have awaken our government that AA can eliminate Firefly in 6 months so our leaders saw this and agreed to the share swap . Why blame MASEU ? their leaders have been briefed and explained in details about how the losses MAS have incurred , thats why MASEU remain quite as they understand the real situation . Its the foundation of the business structure of MAS that involved so many intricacies that cannot be changed be it their suppliers, contractors,ticketing and booking systems etc etc .Now everybody thinks that those involved are in cohorts , think lah people, get your mindset off the box .

    I cannot agree more with other readers that Azman Mokhtar, Rashdan and other director of MAS especially Azman Yahya who has been on MAS Board for a long time and recently appointed director of AirAsia should all resign because they are not fit to be holding on their post. Azman Yahya, of course, can remain in AA to protect AA interest but not MAS.

    With such facts before their eyes and yet they can go on with the share swap and also collaborative frameworks was a clear sign of “HARAPKAN PAGAR, PAGAR MAKAN PADI!

    Three of you are close friends of TF, please resign if you have a little bit honour / MARUAH! Please don’t make the MELAYU malu ok! Bloody idiots.

    Dear YB, I hope you will help MAS to fight for its right and put a STOP to all these nonsense those idiots are doing. I got to know from my friends in MAS that the new management have brought in some new consultants (Mat salleh) last week for a high profile meeting in KLIA.
    People must be wondering why everytime a new management takeover, they will bring in a team of new consultants and these new consultants are always the mat-salleh. Aren’t we Malaysian fit to be consultants?
    It’s really sad to see Firefly terminating their jet service to Sabah & Sarawak and those are the most profitable routes. Well it looks like AA is laughing and smiling, now that Firefly is not flying there anymore.
    TF, Azman Mokhtar, Rashdan aka Danny, Kamarudin Meranun, Md Nor, all of you are real idiots and sampah to the country. You guys are not only a digrace to the country but also to the people of your own race.

    Tan Sri Md Nor Md Yusof also brought in MAt Salleh consultants when he was the MD of MAS. What happened? MAS still had problems which have been unsolved for years since after Tan Aziz left MAS.

    AJ: please take note MAS problems are about LEAKAGES in MAS and it does not need an organisation chart to solve. It needed the political wills of the management. Definitely it cannot be done by those who have been involved in the previous managment or consultants of the previous management like Rashdan, Tan Sri Md Nor, Datuk Azman Yahya also from SCOMI (under WAU) and Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar.

    The management must also be beware of the ” good smaritan” like Tony who have been shown to be telling lies and spinning. He is just a good spinning doctor at best. Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar and Rashdan knew about this very well because they are all good friends.

    When it comes to our national asset like MAS, all friendship becomes secondary importance. The national interest must come first which Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar and Rashdan are incapable of differentiating.
