Your MP’s Question of the Week #54

Soalan Mingguan WR Anda ke-54

Installation of telco antennas on top of shops, apartments and houses …

In my constituency, Wangsa Maju, and many other areas, it is noted that a great number of telco antennas and dishes have been sprouting up all over the place and they are uncomfortably close to the rakyat’s homes or places of work.

I understand that owners of buildings can collect thousands of Ringgit for monthly rental from these telco operators. However, what the public is not informed of is this: how dangerous are these electromagnet/radio waves pollution and transmission dishes and towers to our health?

It is believed that the electromagnet emissions may cause LEUKEMIA, BRAIN CANCER, SCLEROSIS and DEGENERATIVE DISEASES THAT AFFECT NERVE CELLS IN THE BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD. I am told that many lives have been scarified because of the electromagnet emission too near at the residential areas. One of the known victims was a young lawyer, the late Mr Mah Teck Cheong, who lived in Jalan Malinnja 2.

So the question for this week is:

Should the government implement an immediate ban on the haphazard installation of telco antennas, dishes or towers and conduct proper research on the impact of these installations on public’s health before approving and allowing telco companies to install them on rooftops of shops, apartments and/or houses?

Agree with immediate ban because it is affecting public health unless the telcos can prove that it is 100% safe. No more profits for telcos at the expense of public health.

Telco Dishes & Antennas at Taman Bunga Raya, Wangsa Maju.

Yesterday DBKL took actions to dismantle all the telco dishes and antennas in the shop houses at Taman Bunga Raya.

On behalf of the residents, I would would like to say “Thank You” to Yg Bhg Datuk Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail, the Datuk Bandar KL and DBKL officers for acting in the interests of the public.

I believe that there are other telco dishes and antennas in the residential areas in Wangsa Maju. I am compiling it and will be highlighting in my blog in due course.

I would like to also say thank you to the readers of my blog and the residents of Wangsa Maju for helping me by highlighting such matter to me.

    With kindest regards

    Dear YB Wee,

I read your article with interest. You raise a very good point. I am sure you are aware there is a document prepared by the Malaysian Technical Standard Forum that address to a limited extent the exposure from the BTS. I am giving you the URL and you could pick the document from there.

    http://www.mtsfb.org.my/docs/technicalcodes/2005/4-004_2005_-RFEmissionControl_ofCellularRadioSitesTECH_STD_Rev1.pdf

I think you will find the following article more useful although it is a applied in Australia.

    http://majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/files/12561/EA%20App%2012%20Electromagnetic%20Radiation%20Survey%20Report.pdf

I met someone representing the body that gives approval for telecommunication infrastructure in Selangor some years ago (5 years ago). I remember, I was impressed although they still needed a lot of work to ensure public safety it was a good start. I can’t remember the name of the body but some of your friends may. Not sure if the organisation still exist but you could check because it was at the State level.

As a telecommunication specialist I would like to inform you that the following parameters are critical when evaluating the safe environment: operating frequency, radiated power levels, number of BTS and duration of exposure (so having a transmitting station near a highway may mean a few minutes or seconds of exposure as compared to a home, school or hospital).

Please email directly if you need any clarfication.
