A Datuk Bandar elected by the rakyat preferred

The present Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur, Yg Bhg Dato’ Ab Hakim Borhan, will be retiring at the end of this month. There was speculation that Yg Bhg Dato’ Ab Hakim Borhan will be extended for another two years.

My take is Yg Bhg Dato’ Ab Hakim Borhan will not be extended and Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail, the former Yang Di Pertua of Subang Jaya Municipal Council in 1997 and the present Director-General of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government will be the new Datuk Bandar KL. I am informed that he is a no-nonsense man.

Whatever the case may be, it is always my stand that the post of Datuk Bandar should be elected by the KL residents. In other big cities, the Mayor is elected by the people.  Why must Datuk Bandar KL be appointed? Even the Prime Minister had to go back to electorate during General Elections.

Perdana Menteri pun perlu menghadapi pengundi-pengundi setiap Pilhanraya Umum.

    Change is what we need!

YB I agree. If we have a system in place, the rakyat will not be subject to the peril of having the wrong man imposing his own will on people who pays him and yet knows nothing about him, especially the will is not in the people’s interest

Whoever he may be. I will support harsh punishment on vandals, spitters and rubbish makers in KL. Time to clean up otherwise KL will become rural China of the 1970’s.

I doubt the administration of the day will allow this election of DB. The voting trend in KL will not look good when they go campaigning elsewhere.

The law must be amended. Especially the Federal Capital Act 1960 which statutorily preserves the right to appoint, rather than elect the mayor. The same Act also advocates the lack of transparency in terms of governance and expenditure of the city. This Act was devised so as to ‘retain control’ of the capital under the federal government regardless of the outcome of general elections. KL folk are in a situation where they have no say nor control in a city the live in; a city that continues to be run by the Federal Govt despite being rejected in the last GE.

It is the job of all 10 KL MPs, not one only, to strive for democrative reforms in KL. This, they must put as priority. So far there seems to be a hint of forgetfulness on the MPs’ part on why they were elected in the first place.

Maaf YB kerana first time saya tak setuju dengan YB.

There is already too much politics in Malaysia.

Thank you so much for all of your valuable views – points taken.

    kassimselamat2:

Please be informed that from 1995 to 2004 there is no Menteri WP. It was only after 2004 that Menteri WP was appointed by Badawi.

Actually in Wilayah, Menteri WP has very little power if compare with that of Datuk Bandar. All the powers of the Datuk Bandar are enshrined in the Federal Capital Act. In fact, Datuk Bandar can ignore Menteri WP. Menteri WP only has the power of patronage over Datuk Bandar.

I am not talking about popularity when I support Datuk Bandar to be elected. I am talking about making Datuk Bnadar to be accountable to the KL residents. At the moment, Datuk Bnadar is only accountable to the PM only because the PM is instrumental in getting him appointed. If he is accountable then DBKL will be more efficient and KL will be a better place for all of us.

However, I do appreciate your views.
