The 41% jump of 78 sen to RM2.70 per litre of petrol on 05 June announced by the Badawi administration is harsh to the extreme.
More so when Malaysia is a net exporter of petroleum. (Please study chart below to compare our petrol price with other oil producing countries.)
The prices of everything will be affected and the rakyat will suffer when their salaries have generally not increased since the last financial crisis in 1997.
The prices of essential items like rice, fish, eggs, chicken, flour, sugar, cooking oil and condensed milk, etc. have already shot up drastically. With the same amount of money in hand, the rakyat can only buy less. This means families will have less to eat when it comes to food. The damaging effects of the high petrol price on the cost of housing and transportation are also two other looming worries which will crush heavily on the rakyat in the days to follow.
The Badawi administration, it seems, is insensitive and is prepared to let the rakyat suffer by increasing the price of petrol exorbitantly. The rakyat want to speak up and let the sleeping prime minister wake up to their problems. But the police and the lame duck prime minister himself have gone to the mainstream media and told the public not to protest. The question for this week then, is …
As a citizen of this country, do you think it is just and fair for the police and the prime minister of Malaysia to prevent the people from collectively voicing their hardships to their government in public so that measures can be taken to alleviate their problems?
Soalan Mingguan WR Anda #13
Hell no! The government has no right to stop the people from protesting any unpopular policy or any corrupt practice that affects the people directly. The police can go shuff themselves, too. Their job is to maintain law and order and not prevent the public from public protests. They have no right.Protests from the people is a democractic right like electing the people to represent the people in government.Who does the government think they are when they are elected to represent the people by the people, of the people and for the people.Badawi and the police better wake up to this simple, democractic fact if not they are no better than the Nazis. Haprak!
“Besides, studies have shown repeatedly that subsidies for gasoline mostly benefit the higher income strata of the population because they are the ones who can afford to drive cars or who can profit by using it as an input in their (export) businesses (eg. transportation) [16]. Therefore, it is advisable to ban gasoline subsidies altogether and transfer the subsidy amounts directly to the population equally or to the population who needs it specifically.”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Petroleum_of_IranIran Petrol to be supplied at floating price, quota to be liftedhttp://www2.irna.com/en/news/view/menu-237/0805187725142655.htm
I don’t care. On 12th July or any time I shall exercise my right to express my disgust for the Bodowi’s administration. We must all stand up against this dictator and his SIL. Bodohwi is screwing up this country. Jom! 12 July I will see all my fellow Malaysians at KLCC for an afternoon walk. Who said we, the rakyat cannot do an afternoon walk or get togehter!
In my opinion, we eventually have to pay for rising fuel cost. But I don’t agree with the subsidising of fuel cost to IPP. Check here:http://maverickysm.blogspot.com/2008/06/pseudo-secret-of-fuel-gas-subsidy.html
Tell Badawi and his SIL that time up and get lost. We need a leader for the country and not for our family.I want to join the 12th July rally on klcc. See you all there!
Price hike too steep, impact not properly studied. The Govt don’t seem to care- which leads me to think- many of the cabinet people are living high above the inflation effects. Damn them. Our country is so screwed. The P Ramlee days are much better.I think we need to study and plan how we can overthrow the government… maybe look into case studies like Philippines and Thailand. We as rakyat must do what we must do. Must stop here otherwise blood pressure will go up.
It must be noted that even if the government does not plan to target low-income Iranians for the subsidies, experts agree that in the worst case senario (the present situation that is), it would make more sense to distribute the same amount of subsidies in the Government’s budget (if not more) to the entire population equally and directly through cash payments. That would be $400 USD per adult per year in 2006 for gasoline alone when the average annual salary in Iran is $2,700 USD; instead of implementing a two-tier payment system that can be technically defrauded, so as to avoid the real cost incured by the underprivileged, general population and the government because of contraband, waste and over-consumption among other reasons cited above [21]. This is the easiest and most efficient solution because inflation would increase by the same amount or much less than the purchasing power of the Iranian consumers, because of the cash transfer from the government to the Iranian people as described above (from previously budgeted subsidies).[22] This, above the transfer from the thieves to the Iranian people (from the proceeds of the smuggling activity). Therefore it is not even a problem that the measure would be unpopular for the rulers, if things are explained properly to the population and implemented (quite the opposite!). These subsidies are de-facto a massive and illegal transfer of wealth – counted in billions of dollars per year – from the people of Iran to the pockets of the ruling class/mafia,[23][24] but disguised as “economic help/assistance” to the Iranian people and this is the only real reason why they are kept in place.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Petroleum_of_Iran
The Bodohwi government should stop subsidising private companies like AirAisa by allowing MAB and MAS to give credit facilities to it. The government must know the financial cost to the debts owed by AIrAsia to MAB and MAS. The people must now sand up against this irresponsible government, whose existence is ony for themselves and not the people. So count me for 12th July. All responsible Malaysians must attend to register our feelings so that this stupid government will know.

Fuel subsidies does not help the poor as the rich who can afford to buy cars benefit the most from it.Mismanagement/corruption by BN does not justify fuel subsidies either. In fact corruption is increased by providing subsidies as those goods are smuggled out of the country to be sold at a higher price thus resulting in shortages and supply problems.Even if Pakatan Rakyat does come into power, they should not provide fuel subsidies as it is a serious mismanagement.
While the recent fuel hike was too steep and sudden, I do believe gradual removal of subsidy is an eventuality. Malaysians are too pampered and detached from reality with almost everything subsidized and controlled. In fact this is why we are in the situation we are now. I think the real problem is not about subsidy but really the obvious mismanagement by the govt. The conflicting remarks and promises by the ministers only confuse people and shows that proper planning is lacking. With lack of proper planning, implementation goes down the drains (a trade mark of Malaysia). I would like to comment on the figure showing the petrol price in some countries. I have serious doubts on its accuracy. However, I only have 1 experience which is in UAE. When I was there a few months back the pump price is AED6.25 per gallon. This is probably about RM1.60 per liter. The RM1.19 per liter shown is a gross distortion. Even in oil-producing country like UAE, the pump price has increased before, what more Malaysia.
What Calvin said is right. The chart is seriously misguided as Iran offers their fuel cheap but maintains a 100 liter limit per person per month. Even now they have planned to float it according to market prices.
Also what joharihamzah mentioned is right. How can the government justify giving RM150 to a motorcyclist who is poor while giving RM625 to a car user who is obviously rich enough to buy a car and buy more petrol?
I prefer the income level for all Malaysians to be increased, public transportation so efficient that our reliant on self-own vehicles hence retail petrol purchases are minimal and affordable. That’s sustainable policy. We need to1) eliminate corruption2) all real competition in all economic sector3) business friendly and responsible government at federal, state and local levelIn short, a first world country in all respect and I cannot see the Badawi administration nor his successor can bring about.RegardsLee Wee Tak
joharihamzahTerima kasih diatas tegoran sdr.
Semoga Sihat Selalu.
YB Wee,the petrol subsidy is just funny, the rich one enjoying cheap oil but the poor or medium one are suffering from high price of oil.we need to know the subsidy must benefict to the poor not for the rich.why not just hike the car above 2000cc by 400% or more percent. i think they still can afford ittake example, from the web sitehttp://www.autoworld.com.my/tools/roadtax.aspBMW 7 series with 3500cc is roughly RM4380, if government hike it it’s only about RM17520. it’s still very cheap for the rich while they enjoying cheap oil price at RM1.92 at that time.
Dear YB WeeIt is heartening to read about what you are doing for yourconstituents.Allow me to digress from your question.People who are poor in your constituency will be hard hit by the inflation generated by the drastic hike in the price of petrol. Can you help them by getting them to organise into co-operatives? For example, purchasing co-ops (to purchase items in bulk so as to save money), rotating credit associations and so on?What a mess – raising petrol price drastically without any anti-inflation programme in place and without a programme to help the poor to cope with the rising prices!Phua Kai Lit, PhD
Good day Sir!.
