Swearing-in ceremony of Members of Parliament

Today’s session, which began at approximately 10.00 a.m., was mainly preoccupied with the election of the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, swearing-in of individual Members of Parliament totalling 222 members and finally election of the Deputy Speakers.

The position of the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat was won by YB Pandikar Amin as he was the only nomination. The positions of the two Deputy Speakers however had three nominations, namely YB Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Bin Tuanku Jaafar, YB Datuk Ronald Kiandee and YB Tan Seng Giaw. The first two YBs were successful in their election.

The first two newly elected lawmakers to be sworn in as Members of Parliament were the PM and the Deputy PM. My turn to be sworn in came about at approximately 12 noon.

It is important to note that newly elected lawmakers only become full-fledged Members of Parliament after they have taken their oath of office.

The gist of my swearing-in statements essentially covers my solemn declaration:
1. That I, Wee Choo Keong, being chosen as a member of parliament, vow to honestly fulfill my obligations to the best of my ability, and
2. I pledge my true loyalty to Malaysia, and ,
3. I vow to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution

Tomorrow, the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, will officially open the first session of Parliament which will be followed by His Royal Address.

Before my swearing-in ceremony, here’s a shot of my opposite view of where the BN MPs sit. At the far end is the public gallery. In the centre, the PM was taking his oath of office.

Here’s a shot of my opposite view to my left

Saying hello and catching up with my fellow …

Pakatan Rakyat elected lawmakers before the ceremony

Your yang Berkhidmat taking oath of office

Here is where I will be sitting as Member of Parliament
for Wangsa Maju

A plea from a member of the electorate.Dear members of parliament, all I want is a peaceful and harmonious country. Please always have the love of our country in your hearts no matter what you undertake from this day onward. Please help to have the riches of our country distributed equally to all segments of society. Spread joy and happiness to one and all, young and old. Please have a heart for the senior citizens in our society who need help and care. Make their remaining years pleasant and carefree, appreciate the contributions they have made to our country.Spare a thought for the poor and struggling families that exist in this nation of ours. Most of the time, they are voiceless, lend them your voice. Let their plight be known in parliament and help bring them the necessary assistance for them to create a decent life.Do not forget the young, help build a healthy environment so that youthful talents can blossom. Help to create an environment that is free of drugs and pornography. Put your talents together to see that quality education is provided to the future leaders of our country.Allow good sense and decency to be your guides in whatever you do from today. Always be aware and conscious of your prime duty – to help to unite the people and to do your best to discard all words and deeds that can disunite the people.

Dear Mr Wee,Honestly, from the pictures you looked very elegent. We wish u well in the parliment. Also, I read from your Jeff Ooi’s blog that some MPs didnt really say the phrase ‘ dengan jujur’ out well and some even didnt raise thier hands when taking the oath until reminded by the speaker. Comes to show how insincere some BN MPs are. Its a pitty they are in the houseWould u consider blogging from the Parliment. Jeff and Tony Pua has started. Maybe you can follow suit as I believe the speed connection is quite good. Also, you can utilize the web to look for any info while matters are being discussed, as a backup to your points and to refute BNs points which may be misleadingcongrats again!

Mr WeeI caught a few headlines from various international news agency about the serious impact of the developing worldwide food crisis. One of which I linked below…http://www.swissinfo.org/eng/front/UN_rapporteur_calls_for_action_on_food_crisis.html?siteSect=106&sid=9027744&cKey=1209412779000&ty=stI think we need to seriously look into this issue from a national security point of view. Instead of top-down approach from the executive I think we need to do more collaboration whereby resources and expertise be drawn from even the people to provide knowledge and guidance on how to tide ourselves through this crisis. There is a need to disseminate as much information to the rakyat and organized ourselves in smaller group within the DUN and parliamentary area so as to be able to help one another.Points like food conservation, urban food production even within a high-rise flat, eg and etc to help the general public face this global problem.Perhaps you can raise this as one of your weekly question to create awareness as well as to mobilize resources.Thank you.
